Clad in her signature confident demeanor, Speaker Among arrived at the NRM Secretariat in Kyadondo, where she was warmly welcomed by party officials and supporters. While addressing reporters after the formalities, she emphasized the importance of early preparation for the elections, urging all party aspirants to avoid the pitfalls of last-minute activity.
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, has officially picked her nomination forms from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission offices in Kampala, reaffirming her intention to seek re-election as the Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament in the 2026 general elections.
“I encourage all aspirants to use this time wisely and avoid last-minute rushing,” Speaker Among said, underscoring the need for organization and strategic planning in the run-up to the highly anticipated 2026 elections.
Speaker Among’s re-entry into the race further cements her political influence in Bukedea District and her rising stature within the NRM, having held the Speaker’s position since 2022. Her political journey has been marked by staunch advocacy for service delivery, women empowerment, and parliamentary reform.
Speaker Among’s remarks came on the heels of the official launch of the NRM’s expression of interest process for the 2026 general elections. The NRM Electoral Commission, under the leadership of Dr. Tanga Odoi, announced that the party would be receiving applications from members aspiring to contest for various positions — including parliamentary seats, district chairperson roles, and other key local government offices.
The process, which will run over several weeks, aims to allow aspirants adequate time to submit their credentials, meet vetting requirements, and engage their constituencies.
Dr. Odoi emphasized transparency and discipline in the exercise, noting that the NRM remains committed to ensuring a democratic internal selection process that reflects the will of the people.
“The NRM remains a party of structure, order, and fairness. All candidates must follow the guidelines to ensure the credibility of the primaries,” said Dr. Odoi.
Bukedea District, located in Eastern Uganda, has been a stronghold of the NRM, with Speaker Among playing a pivotal role in consolidating the party’s support base there. Her leadership in Parliament and consistent engagement with grassroots communities have elevated her profile both locally and nationally.
Among’s decision to seek another term signals her continued dedication to legislative leadership and constituency development. She is expected to campaign on a platform of continuity, service delivery, and deepening the district’s voice in national decision-making.
As Uganda gears up for the 2026 general elections, the early movements by high-profile leaders like Speaker Anita Among set the tone for what promises to be a competitive electoral season. The NRM, as the ruling party, will be under pressure to maintain its political dominance while ensuring credible internal processes that foster unity and public trust.
Speaker Among’s re-nomination bid also serves as a rallying call to other incumbents and aspiring leaders to begin early groundwork, emphasizing policy, people engagement, and community development.
