A spirit of triumph, resilience, and academic excellence filled the air today as the Makerere University Business School (MUBS) held its 18th graduation ceremony, awarding diplomas, postgraduate diplomas, and certificates to a total of 551 students. Among the celebrants were 11 inmates from Luzira Prison, a remarkable testament to MUBS' long-standing commitment to inclusive education.

The graduation ceremony, held at the MUBS campus in Nakawa, was presided over by the MUBS Principal, Prof. Moses Muhwezi, who lauded the resilience and determination of all graduates. In his address, Prof. Muhwezi emphasized the institution’s proud affiliation with Makerere University.

“We are proud to be affiliated to Makerere University. We are fully integrated in its academic framework, benefiting from its esteemed reputation, resources, and experience,” said Prof. Muhwezi.

“This affiliation allows us to align with Makerere University’s broader mission of academic excellence, research, and national development.”

A particularly moving highlight of the ceremony was the graduation of 11 inmates from Luzira Prison who earned diplomas in Entrepreneurship Studies. This initiative, which has run for over 14 years, reflects MUBS’ belief in second chances and the transformative power of education.

“We congratulate all our graduands, especially the Luzira inmates, whose commitment to personal reform and academic achievement is deeply inspiring,” Prof. Muhwezi added. “We thank the Uganda Prisons Service for their partnership and dedication in sustaining this impactful programme.”

Since its inception, the Luzira education program has continued to empower incarcerated individuals with practical knowledge and entrepreneurial skills, aimed at better reintegration into society upon release.

In his congratulatory message, Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe commended MUBS for its steadfast commitment to discipline and academic integrity. He further recognized the strong leadership of Prof. Muhwezi, who was recently confirmed as the second substantive Principal of MUBS.

“I thank MUBS for upholding its reputation as a disciplined institution,” said Prof. Nawangwe. “I congratulate Prof. Muhwezi on your appointment. Your leadership has propelled MUBS to new heights, filling us with pride and optimism. We celebrate your achievements and look forward to continued success under your leadership.”

The 18th MUBS graduation ceremony not only marked the academic success of hundreds of students but also underscored the institution's dedication to social transformation through education. As MUBS continues to grow under Prof. Muhwezi's guidance, its legacy of academic excellence and inclusive opportunity promises to impact even more lives across Uganda.

MUBS’ enduring partnership with Makerere University and the Uganda Prisons Service serves as a shining example of how institutions can work together to create real societal change—one graduate at a time.
