The Uganda Women’s National Basketball Team, popularly known as the Gazelles, is gearing up for the FIBA Africa Zone V Qualifiers in Cairo, Egypt, with their eyes firmly set on securing a coveted spot at the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket. In a significant development, the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) has announced the appointment of Nicholas Natuhereza as the Gazelles’ new head coach.
Natuhereza, who previously served as the team’s assistant coach, steps into his new role following the departure of former head coach Goran Lojo. Lojo, credited with a successful tenure, opted to pursue another opportunity with Great Britain. Despite his departure, FUBA expressed gratitude for Lojo’s contributions and wished him well in his future endeavors.
FUBA President, Mr. Nasser Sserunjogi, voiced confidence in Natuhereza’s ability to lead the team, stating:
“Nick Natuhereza will be the head coach for the Gazelles at the upcoming FIBA Zone V Qualifiers in Cairo, Egypt. While Goran Lojo was initially set to lead the team, he opted for another opportunity, and we wish him all the best. However, we trust Nick’s experience and knowledge will guide the team to success.”
To complement Natuhereza’s leadership, Julius Lutwama has been appointed as the assistant coach. Additionally, Ugandan basketball legend Ben Komakech joins the team as the video analyst, a role critical for game preparation and strategy development. This combination of experience and innovation is expected to bolster the Gazelles’ performance on the court.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Natuhereza remarked: “I accept the challenge. It’s always an honor to be in this position as the head coach. Hopefully, we can do some good things and qualify for the AfroBasket.”
His appointment is widely seen as a strategic move to build on the Gazelles’ recent successes while introducing fresh perspectives.
