Seth Murari Declares Bid for Mbarara City Lord Mayor Seat, Promises to Elevate City to Global Standards
Murari, best known as the architect of the “Save River Rwizi” campaign — a landmark environmental movement focused on conserving the endangered River Rwizi and promoting a cleaner, greener Mbarara — said his decision to run was driven by a deep desire to transform the city’s urban management and give residents the leadership they deserve.

In a move that has sparked widespread interest and conversation, renowned environmentalist and civic advocate Seth Murari has officially declared his intention to contest for the Mbarara City Lord Mayor seat. Murari made the announcement today at the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission Headquarters in Kampala, where he picked his expression of interest and nomination forms ahead of the party primaries.
“I am stepping forward to serve. My dream is to put Mbarara on the map of top cities in the world. We have the resources, the people, and the potential — all we need now is visionary leadership,” Murari said during a brief address to the media.
For years, Murari has earned a reputation as a determined and passionate advocate for environmental justice, community health, and sustainable urban development. His Save River Rwizi campaign has led tree-planting drives, public clean-up exercises, environmental education in schools, and collaborations with local government bodies to improve water conservation and waste disposal practices.
Now turning his focus to the political arena, Murari says his vision for Mbarara City is centered on four key pillars: urban modernization, environmental sustainability, youth empowerment, and inclusive development. He pledged to work closely with both the central government and international partners to attract investment, improve infrastructure, and promote innovation in service delivery.
“Mbarara is not just a city in western Uganda — it is a regional hub with strategic importance. We must think boldly. We must act responsibly. And above all, we must lead with integrity,” he emphasized.
Murari's entrance into the race adds momentum and depth to the upcoming mayoral contest. His grassroots credibility, especially among the youth, business community, and environmental stakeholders, presents a formidable force in the NRM primaries and potentially in the general election.
As political temperatures begin to rise in Mbarara, the announcement is expected to shift dynamics in the city's political landscape. Analysts suggest that Murari’s clean track record, clear vision, and hands-on approach could resonate with a population eager for change, transparency, and improved urban governance.
With the campaign period drawing near, residents of Mbarara — and indeed Ugandans across the country — will be watching closely as Seth Murari rolls out his official campaign platform and begins his journey toward the City Hall.
