Gogonyo, Pallisa District
In a significant step towards improving water access and boosting agricultural productivity, a team from Nexus Green, working under the Ministry of Water and Environment, visited Gogonyo Sub-county to assess the status and needs of irrigation and water supply in the area. The visit was part of the government's ongoing efforts to address water challenges and enhance service delivery in rural communities.
The assessment visit, which yielded positive outcomes, involved direct engagements with residents of various parishes, including Angondi, Osiepai, and Kadumire. Community members expressed their specific concerns and needs regarding water access. In Angondi Parish, residents requested for a clean water supply due to the salinity of their existing water sources. Osiepai Parish called for additional water sources to support both domestic and agricultural use, while Kadumire Parish emphasized the need for a dedicated irrigation project to facilitate farming, especially during dry seasons.
Responding to the community's calls, Hon. Orone Derrick, the Area Member of Parliament for Gogonyo Constituency in Pallisa District, officially launched a solar-powered water supply and irrigation system in Gogonyo Sub-county. The project, implemented in partnership with Nexus Green, aims to provide a sustainable, environmentally friendly solution to the region's water challenges.
Speaking at the launch event, Hon. Orone commended the collaboration between the Ministry of Water and Environment and Nexus Green, and reiterated his commitment to ensuring that essential services reach the grassroots. “Water is life, and access to it should not be a luxury. With these solar-powered systems, our people will no longer walk long distances for unsafe water. Farmers will also be able to irrigate their crops throughout the year, boosting food security and incomes,” he said.
The solar-powered systems are designed to draw and distribute clean water for both domestic use and irrigation, offering a long-term solution to the community’s challenges. By harnessing solar energy, the initiative also supports Uganda’s drive toward sustainable energy use and environmental conservation.
Residents lauded the development, describing it as a timely intervention that would transform their livelihoods. Community leaders and local council representatives expressed gratitude for the government’s responsiveness and pledged to safeguard the infrastructure for long-term benefit.
This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to ensure equitable water access and promote climate-smart agriculture across the country. Hon. Orone affirmed that he and other leaders would continue to engage government and development partners to extend more services to the people of Gogonyo and Pallisa at large.
With such transformative projects underway, Gogonyo is steadily positioning itself as a model for rural development through strategic partnerships and committed leadership.
