Ministry of Transport Pledges Support for Insurance Sector, Urges Focus on Boda Boda Operators

The Ministry of Works and Transport has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the growth of the insurance sector, particularly in areas related to transportation.

Speaking as Chief Guest at the 14th edition of the Insurance Agents Awards 2024 held at Hotel Africana on Wednesday, Minister Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala emphasized the need to extend insurance coverage and awareness to boda boda riders, who account for the largest number of road crashes but remain the least insured.

The minister announced that the government will soon introduce mandatory vehicle testing for vehicles covered only by third-party insurance. This move aims to improve road safety and reduce accidents, which continue to claim many lives.

Gen. Katumba Wamala commended the Uganda Insurers Association (UIA) for its ongoing efforts to eliminate unqualified operators in the sector and for engaging with key stakeholders. He urged insurers to intensify educational campaigns targeting boda boda riders, acknowledging their vital role in Uganda’s economy and the need to include them in the formal insurance space.

The event also featured remarks from UIA CEO Jonan Kisakye, who opened the ceremony by thanking sponsors, partners, UIA member companies, and the organizing committee for the success of the event. He noted a remarkable increase in attendance compared to previous editions.

Kisakye highlighted major resolutions from the recent Insurance Agents Convention, including continued support for agents, the creation of a digital registration platform, increased sponsorship of the Agents Awards by insurance firms, and deeper collaboration with the Uganda Revenue Authority to address pressing tax issues.

He concluded by urging all industry players to celebrate the progress made and to remain united in advancing Uganda’s insurance sector.
