Hon. Peter Werikhe Joins 2026 Race, Urges Bubulo County West Voters to Renew His Mandate
The seasoned legislator, who is representing Bubulo County West under the NRM ticket, expressed confidence in his track record and urged voters to renew his mandate. “I have done great work so far for the people of Bubulo County West.
Hon. Peter Christopher Werikhe, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Bubulo County West in Manafwa District, officially picked nomination forms today at the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission headquarters in Kyadondo, signaling his intent to contest in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
The seasoned legislator, who is representing Bubulo County West under the NRM ticket, expressed confidence in his track record and urged voters to renew his mandate. “I have done great work so far for the people of Bubulo County West. I am here again to humbly request that voters allow me to continue representing them in Parliament,” he said after picking his forms.
Hon. Werikhe’s move comes just days after the ruling NRM party officially opened its expression of interest process on June 2, 2025. The party is inviting aspiring candidates from across the country to collect nomination forms for positions ranging from Parliamentary seats to district chairpersons and other local government offices.
Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, confirmed the smooth start of the process. “The exercise began well, and we expect it to run until June 15. Official nominations will then take place on June 17,” he announced during a press briefing at the party headquarters.
Dr. Tanga also emphasized that any member intending to vie for a parliamentary seat must pay a non-refundable nomination fee of UGX 3 million. “This is part of our commitment to organizing transparent and competitive internal elections,” he said.
Hon. Werikhe reiterated his dedication to the four fundamental responsibilities of a Member of Parliament:
Legislation: He has actively participated in the legislative process, contributing to the passage of laws aimed at propelling Uganda’s socio-economic development.
Representation: As the voice of Bubulo County West, Werikhe has consistently presented the concerns and aspirations of his constituents on the floor of Parliament, influencing national policy through grassroots-informed debate.
Budget Approval: He has played a pivotal role in analyzing and approving national budgets, ensuring that the interests of Manafwa and the greater Bugisu sub-region are considered in national development priorities.
Oversight: Hon. Werikhe has been part of critical oversight efforts in Parliament, questioning misuse of public resources and advocating for transparency and accountability in government.
As the NRM's internal nomination process gains momentum, Hon. Werikhe’s early show of interest places him among the party's experienced political figures preparing for a fresh mandate in 2026. Local opinion leaders in Manafwa district have welcomed his decision, citing various development projects he has championed, including improvements in rural infrastructure, youth empowerment initiatives, and access to health and education services.
The coming weeks will be crucial as the NRM party structures begin vetting and nominating candidates ahead of the general elections. Meanwhile, Hon. Werikhe has promised to run a people-centered campaign focused on continuity, unity, and transformative service delivery.
