Seven UPDF Generals Honoured Ahead of Retirement at MODVA Headquarters
Presiding over the event, the UPDF Chief of Joint Staff, Major General Jack Bakasumba, praised the retiring generals for their steadfast dedication to national service and their significant contributions to both local and international military engagements.

In a solemn and dignified ceremony held at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) headquarters in Mbuya, seven senior officers of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) were officially documented in preparation for their retirement later this year.
Presiding over the event, the UPDF Chief of Joint Staff, Major General Jack Bakasumba, praised the retiring generals for their steadfast dedication to national service and their significant contributions to both local and international military engagements.
“These leaders have made remarkable contributions to national and regional peace, especially through international missions such as those in Somalia,” Maj Gen Bakasumba stated. “Their leadership has been instrumental in strengthening the UPDF’s capacity and expanding its influence across borders in peace support operations.”
The seven officers preparing for retirement are:
Lt Gen Peter Elwelu
Maj Gen Hudson Mukasa
Maj Gen Francis Ben Okello
Maj Gen George Igumba
Brig Gen John Byuma
Brig Gen Dominic Twesigomwe
Brig Gen Augustine Kamyuka Kyazze
These generals have held key command and administrative roles throughout their illustrious careers, mentoring the next generation of military leaders and contributing immensely to Uganda’s stability and the professional growth of the UPDF.
Maj Gen Bakasumba described retirement as a necessary and honorable phase of military progression that creates room for younger officers to step into leadership, ensuring continuity and institutional resilience.
He encouraged the retirees to approach their next chapter with purpose, maintaining the discipline and values that characterized their military service.
“There is a whole new kind of life ahead, full of experience, just waiting to happen. Some call it retirement, I call it bliss,” he said, quoting American biochemist Betty Sullivan.
He further mentioned ongoing efforts to amend the UPDF Act, 2005, which aim to improve the welfare of retired military personnel. The proposed amendments include enhanced access to healthcare, disability compensation, and full military burial honours, which he said would ensure dignity and support for soldiers even after their active service ends.
Also speaking at the function, Brig Gen James Kinalwa, the Joint Staff Human Resource Management officer, advised the generals to pay keen attention to their health and social conduct as they transition to civilian life.
“You are entering a different world but one where your experience is immensely valuable. Maintain the same discipline and sense of service that defined your careers,” Brig Gen Kinalwa urged.
The event drew attendance from MODVA officials, members of the Joint Services legal team, and representatives from the Veterans Legal Aid Clinics. Their presence underscored the institution’s commitment to providing legal and social support to retiring officers during their reintegration process.
The documentation ceremony marked more than just administrative formality; it was a moment to celebrate the service, sacrifice, and leadership of men who have given decades of their lives to defending Uganda’s sovereignty and contributing to peace in the region.
As the UPDF continues to evolve into a modern, professional force, the retirement of these generals signals a seamless transition that honors legacy while making way for fresh leadership and innovation within the ranks.
